The Site Induction Process

For some years, I have had  profound doubts regarding the effectiveness of the process of induction for contractors and new staff.

I understand the objective of the induction process.  “The standard of care required of a principal is that they take “all practicable steps” to ensure no contractor or subcontractor or their employees is harmed while carrying out the work they are engaged to do.”  The induction process is part of this duty of care.

My concern is that the process of induction and the results of the induction miss the objective by some distance.  In my work, I am visiting sites and undergoing induction on a frequent basis.  I am exposed to different styles of site inductions from the complex to the simple. Read more…

Training Staff in Safe Behaviour

What are we trying to do?  Let’s establish an objective that is clear.  How about, “To develop behavior that will avoid injury and keep staff members safe through effective training.”  A bit long-winded but it makes the point.

To achieve this objective, we need the willing co-operation of the people at risk.  This poses a considerable problem.  This problem could be identified as a question, “Who makes the rules?” Read more…
