7 Ways Improve Your Motivation and Productivity at Work

Often we find ourselves doing jobs and tasks that don’t motivate us. Sometimes, we find them repetitive, boring and are just not stimulated because they hold no challenge for us, so our productivity is low. What makes the situation worse is that we believe that we are hostages held by the job because we cannot afford to change. The solution is in the way that we think and behave. If we have no choice it’s because we are a victim of one of the strongest motivators. This is fear and we are hooked into a fear of change. We want to maintain the current situation because it’s preferable than something new and unknown. But we don’t like the current situation because we are not motivated or productive. The answer is to change the way that we work.

1. Reward yourself for the work you have completed. This will boost your morale and give you a sense of achievement. It will cause you to take more similar actions in the future since you know that your entire effort will be at the very least – self-recognized. This will contribute to you being more productive.

2. Learn something from every task. I was a cleaner for two years. There are few jobs more boring. No matter what task you do, it teaches you something but only if you are prepared to look for the opportunity and want to learn.

3. The power of deadlines. Without deadlines you cannot get a sense of achievement. You need deadlines to exercise control and self discipline. You also need deadlines so that you can measure your productivity. This feedback is essential to your motivation.

4. Everything you do should have a result. Set your desired result and then see if you can achieve it. As a cleaner I set myself targets to reach certain parts of the building in a certain amount of time. I looked for smarter ways of achieving high quality cleaning. Just having those targets helped me to develop more enthusiasm for this very boring task.

5. Make sure you get enough sleep. Being bored at work seems to drain your energy and as a result you stay awake longer and wake up tired. You watch TV although you are exhausted from a boring day at work and end up not getting enough sleep. When you go to work, you just are not motivated. Instead of watching TV, set yourself the goal of learning something that you are interested in.

6. Exchange ideas. Meet people who are doing similar jobs to see if they have got smarter ways of working. Ask your boss for something more challenging or find out if the business has any training courses you can attend to develop your knowledge and skill. This will ultimately boost your motivation level.

7. Prioritize your work daily. Keep the list in order and work to it. The fact that you have checked off the most important tasks of the day will motivate you all the more. Limit your list to five major items otherwise it can knock your motivation if you have a list with 35 things on it and you only complete 4.
